Legal First Aid®

Legal First Aid® equips trusted community members to recognize and address legal issues before they escalate.

What is Legal First Aid®?

Legal First Aid® is an early-intervention training that uses Legal Link’s unique curriculum to give client-facing staff at community-based organizations tools to confidently identify clients’ legal issues and connect them with helpful legal resources.

By helping address problems early, Legal First Aid responders can help clients stay housed, protect their families, and overcome barriers to financial stability.

Why Legal First Aid®?

Many Coloradans have a hard time accessing lawyers. As a result, common legal problems often go unaddressed, making life more difficult for many people in our communities. Issues like evictions, custody disputes, and warrants act as barriers to employment, housing, and stability. Through the Legal First Aid® curriculum, community partners become empowered to act as navigators for individuals and families inadequately supported by the legal system.

Legal Link

The Colorado Access to Justice Commission is excited to partner with Legal Link to make Legal First Aid® Training available in Colorado. Legal Link is an Oakland, California based nonprofit whose mission is to remove legal barriers that prolong poverty by adding critically needed capacity to the legal ecosystem. They train and support community partners to act as legal navigators for the clients they serve. They created the first Legal First Aid® program in 2015. Since then more than 4,000 frontline providers across seven states have completed Legal First Aid certification training.
